First ‘Made for India’ smartphone Mi4i launched by Xiaomi

The Mi4i, Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi's latest offering, made its international debut in India on Thursday, breaking the company's tradition of launching products first in its home market and underscoring the growing importance of the South Asian nation for global handset vendors. The device is priced at Rs 12,999 and will go on sale on April 30. Registrations will start at 8 pm today on Flipkart. Initially, the device will be available on Flipkart and later across all its channels including Mi website.

“India is extremely significant to Xiaomi. It is our largest international market outside of mainland China, and I am truly excited that Mi4i will be launching first in India, followed by our other global markets,” said Xiaomi founder and chief executive officer Lei Jun. Though the device will not be launched in mainland China, it will be sold in markets like Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia later in May.

“This is a flagship product that has drawn a lot of inspiration from India. A lot of tweaking has been done keeping in mind the Indian consumers and is made for India,” Xiaomi VP Hugo Barra said.

Features
Mi4i features a 5-inch 1080p full HD display with a sleek unibody design. It is powered by Snapdragon 615 second-gen 64-bit 8 core processor at 1.7 GHz clock speed, which has been created by Qualcomm India. Xiaomi has collaborated with manufacturing partner Foxconn to manufacture a motherboard that is one of the smallest and thinnest found in a phone this size, making space for a huge 3120mAh battery that can power through 1.5 days of normal usage that is on average 38 per cent more battery capacity across 5-inch premium devices, and 72 per cent higher capacity than the iPhone 6 battery. It also features 4G dual SIM slots with a 13 megapixel rear and 5MP front facing camera.

Xiaomi Global vice president Hugo Barra also announced that the extremely popular Mi Band is coming to India, and will be sold exclusively on their Web site for Rs 999. Xiaomi is already selling one million units of the Mi Band a month, and Mi India fans will now be able to get their hands on one.
