Squinchi – A Tiny Device that could Reduce the Pain and Fatigue in the Wrist Associated with Computer Mouse

If you work at a computer all day, you've probably experienced pain of one sort or another from sitting at your desk and using your computer.

The mouse is a standard piece of computer equipment. Because most people using a mouse in a workplace setting must use the computer keyboard at the same time, using a mouse regularly involves using the same small muscles over and over again, and can lead to discomfort, pain, and even Workplace Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs).

The tendonitis and carpal tunnel syndrome are two forms of over use injury that are common in computer users. Tendonitis is an inflammation of the tendons in the wrist, causing pain with bending the wrist. Carpal tunnel syndrome is an inflammation of the nerve in the wrist, causes numbness and tingling, and sometimes pain, in the fingers of the hand.

The Squinchi could be at your rescue for an old problem – pain and fatigue - which we are facing daily while using a computer mouse. It was invented by a Londoner massage therapist and local artist Cheryl Mazak.

It’s a small semi-ovular plastic device that uses releasable and reusable medical grade adhesive to stick between the carpals of the hand.

The squinchi answers the need for a wrist assist device that does not restrict the range of motion of the wrist while switching between a keyboard and mouse.

The squinchi is easily and quickly applied to and removed from the hand without cumbersome straps that can get in the way of typing at a keyboard. The squinchi allows the hand to move through a wide range of motion.

Strain caused by excessive computer use is increasingly becoming a problem amongst arthritis patients, said Sari Shatil, a physiotherapist and owner of Neuphysio Rehabilitation on Wharncliffe Road.

Now, this product at TechAlley on Oxford Street and on the squinchi website (squinchi.com) for $24.99. You can also find squinchies at several wellness clinics across the city, as reported by LFPress

As a preventive measure while using computer mouse for a longer duration, It is important to take frequent breaks during the day. It is important to use ‘Squinchi’ along with computer mouse, an ergonomic keyboard and to sit with good posture while working. If you develop any concerning symptoms at all, you should see your primary care doctor right away for help.
