Check the vehicle's history for any head gasket repairs. If confirmed, do not buy that vehicle. You can also identify a blown head gasket by doing a simple check. Remove the radiator cap and ask the other person to crank the engine. If you notice bubbles in the coolant, it's a sign you should walk away and look for other options.

2. Cooling system

The cooling system is comprised of a radiator, cooling fan and a bunch of hoses that carry the coolant to and from the engine's block. Now, what could go wrong with a cooling system? A lot. Open the hood, start the engine, let it run for 5 minutes and observe carefully.

As soon as the engine starts to warm up and reaches its threshold temperature, the cooling fan should kick in automatically to drive the heat away from the engine. If not, it could be because of the bad thermostat or the relay which drives the fan.

When the coolant starts to circulate, notice the coolant reservoir closely. If it's spitting the coolant out, there's something wrong with the cooling system, and you should be worried about it.

3. Suspensions

After engine, another potentially problematic area to watch out for is the suspension system. Take the vehicle for a test drive and pay attention to the soft grunts coming from the suspension as you apply brakes or take a U-turn by steering to the extreme. A bad suspension means the vehicle has been roughly driven through potholes and over speed bumps. The crooked suspension can lead to premature wearing of tires despite the regular wheel alignment. It's better not to consider the vehicle for purchase, but if you are firm on buying it, you can negotiate the price based on these findings.

4. Floor

A car's floor is another thing sellers do not talk about and keep your attention away from it. Have a look at the car's floor from underneath, and if you find noticeable patches of rust, it's a sign that the car's base has grown weak over time or due to poor maintenance. In such a situation, you must not consider that vehicle for purchase. But if you're looking forward to a short-term purchase, you can go for it only if the seller cuts down the price.
